Since his first public presentation in Houston in 1999, René Casarsa has developed an extensive repertoire of mostly Argentine tangos, milongas, candombes and waltzes. A selection of themes from the old and the new, as well as pieces with different rhythms are chosen for each recital. The themes are arranged for piano by René in order, in his own words, “to attain a unified style and to convey the genuine essence of the music of Buenos Aires”.
The repertoire includes over 50 compositions from the many periods in the history of tango, with themes of the “Guardia Vieja”, the period that goes from the last decades of the 1800’s to the early decades of the 1900’s, and ending with the latest Piazzolla compositions. From the Guardia Vieja René has selected tangos and milongas such as “Don Juan”, “El Entrerriano”, “El Choclo” and “El Porteñito”. From the 20’s he has chosen “La Cumparsita”, “Organito de La Tarde”, “A Media Luz”, “Milonga Sentimental” and “Por una Cabeza”, made famous by Carlos Gardel.
The period known as “época” or “escuela Decareana”, in honor of the great innovator Julio De Caro, includes his famous “Boedo” and “Loca Bohemia” but also tangos from Juan Carlos Cobián like “La Casita de mis Viejos” and “Los Mareados”. From the Golden 40’s, a period that in reality goes from the mid 40’s to the mid 50’s, there are tangos and milongas by Osvaldo Pugliese, Aníbal Troilo and Mariano Mores. And from the second half of the 20th century René has selected themes by Horacio Salgán, Julián Plaza and some 15 compositions by Astor Piazzolla.Rene Casarsa on Houston Public Radio on September 14, 2005 (streaming audio) |
